Stephen Pham is creative producer and an original member of Sweatshop – an organisation founded in 2014 in partnership with Western Sydney University. Sweatshop works to empower culturally and linguistically diverse communities through literacy.

Growing up as a Vietnamese-Australian in Cabramatta, Stephen realised upon starting university in Sydney’s east that for the first time in his life he was an ethnic minority. He had to learn how to explain himself to people, and share his story over and over again. This is how Stephen discovered the importance of storytelling – because no matter our background, we all have a story to share, and our own unique way of telling it. Now, he helps others to share their stories.

Stephen explained to Sam and Duncan that Sweatshop isn’t about helping people to read and write, but rather better understand the way in which language affects every part of our lives, and finding out what is underneath.
