Serbia, a tiny nation of just 4 million people, faced France for the soccer World Cup Final 2018.

The Serbian diaspora rallied around the globe. Tony Cava, treasurer of the Zagreb team in Sydney was among the crowd at the Punchbowl Serbian Club barracking for their underdog team. He spoke to Stephen O’Doherty on Open House about the importance of soccer in the Serbian culture.

While Serbia lost the match to France by two goals to four, the team celebrated their country’s best result at a FIFA World Cup yet, placing second and topping their third-place finish at the 1998 FIFA World Cup.  Their star player, Luka Modric won the Golden Ball for best player at the FIFA World Cup 2018.
