Throughout his life, Nick has always observed the relationships of his peers and pondered on the possibility of his own pursuit of true love. Many fears plagued his mind from basic needs such as holding hands to more substantial issues such as how he would care for his wife when she needed him. In the interview with Open House, he divulges how his fears were realised when a previous girlfriend was diagnosed with diabetes and how her family felt she needed someone to take care of her, not someone for her to take care of and how the relationship broke down as a result.
But Nick Vujicic never wavered from his journey to love, whilst not always at the forefront of his mind, when he met his wife Kanae at a speaking conference, he could not deny the feelings stirring in his heart. Their path was wrought with obstacles, financial troubles caused Nick to sink into depression and anxiety but his wife never wavered in her love for him and her desire to support him. In the interview he marvelled at her ongoing strength and how it continues to this day with their son just being released from a 40 hour hospital episode. “Don’t give up on life, go through it because the blessings that came from it, I saw the true depths of my wife, through everything she’s still by my side.” Nick passionately believes that the shared faith between him and his wife is the basis of their love and how knowing what they are called to be breaks through the pain, through fear and through difficult circumstance to allow them to support each other.
When asked what he had learnt from his journey thus far, Nick Vujicic reflected that change and the discovery of love helps you learn about yourself and can shift your priorities. Whilst he is still dedicated to the cause of getting 400 million teenagers to donate $1 a day to end world hunger, he realises now that his relationship with God and his relationship with his family come before that; “life is full of curves but with true love, reciprocated love and with faith, you can get through anything.”
