Getting cancer is never going to be a walk in the park. But for new Mums, there’s a unique set of challenges around managing the demands of hospital and chemotherapy while looking after a baby or child. Not to mention the emotional challenge of not knowing whether you’re going to survive to see your child grow up.
Gayle Richardson is a Mum and a cancer-survivor. She remembers the sadness of fighting for her life when all she wanted to do was cherish her time as a new mum. She was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma just three months after her baby was born. In hospital she met fellow mum, Bernadette Vella who was diagnosed with the same illness just 14 weeks into her second pregnancy. Together they started the new charity, Mummy’s Wish, which aims to ease the burden of cancer on mothers of young children.
