Healthcare professionals have undoubtedly been some of the most committed, hardworking, people in the last two years of the pandemic.

While medical care is at the forefront of what they do, looking after patients’ emotional and mental wellbeing is increasingly important as people deal with the absence of loved ones, fear of diagnoses and the collective strain of enduring uncertainty.

Gabi Macaulay is the President of Nurses Christian Fellowship Australia – an organisation focused on how to offer excellent medical care alongside an appreciation for the holistic needs of patients.

“I teach people on how to give spiritual care to people of all faiths,” Gabi told Hope 103.2’s UNDISTRACTED podcast.

“[We ask] ‘What are your values, and how can I facilitate you empowering yourself to care for that part of your healing process?’.

“There’s evidence-based research now worldwide that says if we as healthcare professionals acknowledge that spiritual care part of the while person healing then we, in fact, have people discharged earlier, fewer infections, lesser use of antibiotics and patients don’t ‘bounce’, i.e., get discharged and then come back.”
