“When he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, ‘At home even the hired servants have food enough to spare, and here I am dying of hunger! I will go home to my father and say, “Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired servant.”’ “So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him. (NLT)
Many of us who have travelled can recall the feeling of boarding an aircraft which will bring us home. We are coming back to a place where we belong. And if our journey away has been troubled, we come back to a place where we feel safe.
We can make all sorts of journeys without even leaving our national or domestic home. We journey away from childish dependence to adult independence, from loneliness to companionship, from ignorance to knowledge. Life seems one journey after another.
In regards to faith, we may embark on journeys. Many of us remember a time of drifting away from familiar beliefs and like-minded circles of friends. We may remember times of spiritual drought, where God seemed far away and we clung to him by our fingertips. There have been ultimately futile journeys to some sort of life which promised so much but ended up just another illusion.
There are many different journeys but one common reality in all of them. We do have a home. We do have a Father who will welcome us home irrespective of the journey we have undertaken. No matter how far away we have journeyed from him, we need to know we have a home, and can expect a welcome home.
Blessings,
