When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers— the moon and the stars you set in place— what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them? (NLT)
At least once in my life, I have had to reflect on the sky on a clear night in order to regain perspective on life. It goes like this: if God can create such a universe, he can take care of me. If God can sustain this universe as he does, he can sustain me. If he can do the objectively greater thing, he can do the lesser thing.
Of course, meditating on the starry heavens may have us conclude that our God is far too busy keeping it all together to be concerned about us. How could such a powerful figure pay attention to mere human beings.
Our Psalmist recognises this line of thinking but implies that this God does indeed care for individuals. The one who created the universe and sustains it, is the same one who created human beings and sustained them.
Observing this balance safeguards, us against wrong perceptions of God. One wrong perception is that he is a nice sort of chap who puts an arm around our shoulder but can’t do much about our life issues. The other wrong perception is that he is some super powerful force which is far removed from the relatively petty trivialities of our everyday concerns.
The one who cares for me is the same one who made the universe. The one who flung stars into space is the one who wraps his arms around me when I feel lost and alone in that same universe.
