He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. (NIV)
Many of us have experienced or are experiencing doubts and despondency as we wonder what on earth is happening on earth. In the midst of such perplexity, we may feel as if we are in what the Psalmist terms a slimy pit. It can feel like we are bogged down in quicksand or churning mud: there is no solid ground.
At such times, it is important that we realise there is solid ground even if we have trouble locating it or trusting in it. The solid ground may not seem like much, but it will help us stop sinking beneath the weight of circumstances. We may still have our doubts and our moments of darkness. Mud may cling to us reminding us of the proximity of the miry pit. Faith may not be of the exuberant, world-shattering kind.
But any solid ground is enough. There is much to puzzle us, much we cannot understand, much to threaten us. And yet if we get at least a toehold on that solid ground we can be safe. We don’t have to become spiritual giants, just fragile yet thankful children of God.
And what might that solid ground be? Perhaps the simple fact that God loves me and has shown it through the life and work of Jesus. Much else may be confused or blurred, but that much can be clear. That is our bedrock. Or in the words of the old hymn, “On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand.”
Blessings,
David
