Enjoy what you have rather than desiring what you don’t have. Just dreaming about nice things is meaningless—like chasing the wind. (NLT)
So many of us dream of finding some sort of buried treasure, or perhaps a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. What we now have is not sufficient, what we might have consumes our thoughts and feelings. We are not free to enjoy what we do have because we are preoccupied with what we don’t have.
Of course, there is no problem with wanting things to be different. Life can be tough and we reasonably desire to improve it. We do not see ourselves as stuck in some permanent rut and grimly decide to make the most of it as if there are no options.
The problem arises when our desire for more prevents us from appreciating what we do have. Or when our restlessness reflects a lack of trust in the good plans of God. Or when those dreams of a better future centre on our own advancement and egos.
It can so often happen that we get what we desire, but we are not fulfilled. It is as if we have grasped some forbidden fruit that turns sour in our mouths as we begin to taste it. The promised pot of gold has turned out to be mere gravel. The buried treasure is but dust.
We may legitimately be attracted to the promise of buried treasure, but don’t forget that such treasure may be buried right beneath our feet.
Blessings
