Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God when he judges the world. (NLT)
When we think of the term “witnessing”, we usually think of using words which articulate or perhaps defend our faith. Nothing wrong with that: we are urged to give a reason for what we believe, and our words are to be gracious and wise.
But it is a mistake to think of witness as primarily verbal. How tiresome it is to be always trying to get the talk around to Jesus when in a conversation. We don’t listen, but are intent on getting our message across come what may. We become religious sales people, marketing a product and using all means of persuasion to get others to buy.
The most basic form of witnessing is living a life that reflects Jesus’ own life and teaching. We are to be living signs of God’s presence in the world. Living the right way leads to speaking the right way. Much like Jesus says: we show his light in order that people take note and give honour to God as a result.
Rather than praying frantically that we will find just the right words to say, how about praying that we become more and more conformed to the ways of Jesus. The right words will then follow the right actions. Of course we want to help others embrace Jesus. But make sure we ourselves are already embracing him.
Blessings
David
