We look at this Son and see the God who cannot be seen. We look at this Son and see God’s original purpose in everything created. For everything, absolutely everything, above and below, visible and invisible, rank after rank after rank of angels—everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him. He was there before any of it came into existence and holds it all together right up to this moment. (THE MESSAGE)
Many cathedrals have beautiful ceilings. Problem is they are so far up you can’t get a good view of them without doing damage to your neck muscles. Some cathedrals provide mirrors to visitors. They reflect and magnify the ceiling images which otherwise remain obscure. You hold the mirror a certain way and you can see what would normally be unseen.
So it is with Jesus. If we want to know what God is like, we look to Jesus who holds a mirror up to him. The invisible God has become visible, the obscure God has become clearer, if not crystal clear. Whenever we find ourselves thinking about God, we need to check those thoughts against what we know of Jesus.
This Jesus not only shows us what God is like, he does God’s work at the very start of the world. He was not only there at creation, he was involved in it. And right to this very day, he holds it together, keeping the universe going. In other words, he did not just live for thirty years or so on earth to show us what God was like. He was active prior to that and remains active right now.
He was not part of creation itself, but part of the Godhead which did the creating. He was not just a wonderful human being during his time on earth, he was the mirror image of God. No wonder Christians make such a fuss about Jesus.
