The Lord directs our steps,
so why try to understand everything along the way? (NLT)
At very significant times in our lives, we may not have had the foggiest idea of what was going on. Getting married, the birth of a child, the choice of a career, all such life events had meanings and consequences that we could never grasp at the moment they happened. If we had have known all the consequences, we may not have acted as we did and thus may have missed out on a great chunk of our lives.
Of course we had some idea of what we were doing, but as finite people we could not have knowledge of the big picture. What would that child, that partner, that career turn out to be like? Our life choices have consequences far beyond what our finite minds can imagine.
For those who follow Jesus and thus have his Spirit, this need not be some terrifying leap in the dark. While God does not micro manage our lives and does allow us freedom to choose options, he is able to weave his good purposes into those choices. Life for us is not random. God is able to impress himself on us in such a way that our short term choices can reap longer term benefits.
This is very much the essence of biblical faith. We trust that God knows what he is doing even if we don’t know what he is doing.
Blessings
