Wrong Call — A LifeWords Devotion

What is good and what is evil is decided only by God. We don’t decide what is good: we defer to a good God to do that.

Isaiah 5:20-21

What sorrow for those who say
that evil is good and good is evil,
that dark is light and light is dark,
that bitter is sweet and sweet is bitter.
What sorrow for those who are wise in their own eyes
and think themselves so clever. (NLT)

Any of us can make mistakes, choose the wrong path. We are not infallible. We can even quite deliberately decide to do a bad thing. But some go a step further. They call what is bad “good”. They not so much choose to do something bad but instead label what they do, “good”. It is a reversal of values. A wilful corruption of moral principles.

And those who think this way reckon they are pretty clever. We know best, the usual rules don’t apply to us. We will flourish in the murky darkness of our own egos and interests. It is a wrong call. They won’t get away with it forever.

Bending the rules may seem clever, but the basic moral rules are not some man made regulations imposed by a prevailing culture. They are set in place by a God who is the source and interpreter of those values. We may disagree with them or mock them or ignore them, but they remain in place.

Calling darkness “light” may tell us something about ourselves but light remains light and darkness remains darkness irrespective of our beliefs or choices. Labelling them differently doesn’t change their essential nature. We don’t decide what is good: we defer to a good God to do that.
