“Don’t worry at all then about tomorrow. Tomorrow can take care of itself! One day’s trouble is enough for one day.” (JBP)
It is rarely the present moment that causes us anxiety. It is usually the short or long term future. We play the “what if” game and create our worst case scenarios. In such cases, we imagine some sort of future that carries threats with it.
But the future does not yet exist. It has yet to be formed. We don’t know its precise shape, though our fears or hopes can paint either a scary or rosy picture of it. We do best to live in the present moment because that is the primary reality.
We also live in the present moment because that is where we encounter God. The past has gone and the future is yet to come. We meet God here and now. And it is in this here and now that we find strength to face circumstances.
So many of us worry about how we will face whatever threat will come our way tomorrow or the next day. For one thing, it may not eventuate. For another thing, we will be given strength to face it at that time. God does not, it seems, provide such strength before it is needed. I may feel inadequate right now, but when the time comes, I will be given the help I need to be sustained.
God will give us what we need when we need it. Not before. Whatever we need will be provided. When we worry about the future we are assuming that our present resources are inadequate. Maybe they are, in which case extra resources will be given at the right time. As the old saying goes, today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.
