Read Matthew 28:5-7
5 Then the angel spoke to the women. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6 He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead, just as he said would happen. Come, see where his body was lying. 7 And now, go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and he is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there. Remember what I have told you.” (NLT)
While this text speaks of a particular situation just after the resurrection, it does express a more general truth relevant to our own situations. The risen Jesus goes ahead of us. In the person of his Holy Spirit, he prepares the way.
So when we visit someone, call someone, attend a meeting or a medical appointment, the risen Jesus is already there. It is our task to ‘get in’ on what he is already doing. We have not entered a situation ‘cold’. The risen Jesus has put things in motion; the risen Jesus has prepared the scene. It is up to us to play our part.
This is particularly important in those personal encounters we have with others. We may feel threatened or confused or anxious. Realising Jesus is already at work can help prevent us feeling things are out of control or that we will be overwhelmed. I don’t have to write this script from scratch. I am participating in something Jesus is writing.
It is good to say a one or two second prayer before an email, a phone call, a meeting. We remind ourselves Jesus has gone ahead of us and will be at work. We quietly and quickly ask for wisdom to play our part in what he is already doing. We are not alone.
