The Next Step — A LifeWords Devotion

Focussing too much on tomorrow can cause us to neglect the certainties of today. We know God will be walking with us in the future, as he does today.

Matthew 6:34

Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes. (THE MESSAGE)

If we are walking along a bush track or even in a crowded shopping mall, it is dangerous to fix our eyes solely on what is some distance away. We risk tripping up. We risk injuring other people. We miss out on what is happening in our immediate vicinity.

Relating this to our text today, we can say that focussing too much on the possibilities of tomorrow can cause us to neglect the certainties of today. We can get so worked up about what might happen tomorrow that we lose sight of what is actually happening today.

Of course we rightly think about the future and make wise plans for it. We can’t help but consider various future scenarios. The problem comes when we let this become chronic anxiety, when we leave God out of the picture, when we miss out on solid realities now because we are obsessed with future realities which may or may not occur.

Remember that the future does not as yet exist. Its story is yet to be written. What we know for sure is that the God who is with us in the present will be with us in whatever future awaits us. That means we can take the steps we need to take now without tripping up or harming ourselves or others.

I can walk confidently here and now because I know God will be walking with me in the future.

Blessings
David
