Read John 14:1-6

1 “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. 2 There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? 3 When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.”

5 “No, we don’t know, Lord,” Thomas said. “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. (NLT)

Back in the days of the Cold War, a joke did the rounds in Warsaw. Question: What is the difference between communism and capitalism? Answer: Communism is the exploitation of man by man, capitalism is the reverse. A fairly cynical view of political life, but some cynicism might be justified. No matter what political system we have, there are always winners and losers, always some injustice and corruption.

Some people reckon, in much the same way, that all religions are the same. They basically worship the same God and uphold the same ethical codes. Jesus begs to differ.

True, religions can share common beliefs, common values. Not surprising since we are all made in God’s image. But Jesus wants to tell us that he uniquely reveals God to us. That his mercy and forgiveness are necessary for us to get right with God. Following any other path winds up in a dead end.

Depending on when and where we were born, we might not be conscious of Jesus. Abraham and company were not. But friendship with God is dependent on our calling out for help and Jesus, whether we know about him or not, is the source of help.

When it comes to getting right with God now and forever, not just any faith will do.
