Read Colossians 3:17

17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (NIV)

A young Christian mother once lamented to her pastor that she didn’t seem to be doing a good job of practising any spiritual discipline. She didn’t seem to be able to make the time and space available. Her minister asked what it was that she did do regularly and that required some discipline.

She replied that her infant daughter had some health issues and caring for her took much of her time and energy. Her wise minister reminded her that this was her particular spiritual discipline at this stage in her life. In other words, her everyday devotion to her daughter was itself an act of disciplined obedience to God.

Of course, this doesn’t mean we ignore the classic disciplines of prayer and Bible reading and fellowship. But it is a reminder that we live out our devotion to Jesus in everyday tasks done with discipline and love. If we are truly “in Christ” what we do constitutes witness to him and worship of him.

We daily work out our salvation in the ordinary tasks of life. We are not only “in Christ” in our prayer times or at church. We enter into God’s great and good plans for his world as we go about living for him in the apparently mundane activities of our own worlds.

Blessings
David
