He will not crush the weakest reed
or put out a flickering candle.
He will bring justice to all who have been wronged. (NLT)
In our world today we tend to discard things that are broken. Repairing things is not worth the cost or effort. This might not matter too much with the household toaster but it matters a lot when it comes to people.
We can too easily dismiss other people who exhibit brokenness. We ignore any giftings that may lie hidden beneath their wounds. We then associate exclusively with those who have their act together, who are powering ahead. We relish mixing with the successful and the attractive. Which is in itself a denial of true community.
The richest sort of Christian fellowship comes when we share together our poverty, our brokenness. Simply spouting success stories to one another is an ego game, not community. Christian community is not some religious talent show.
Our text reminds us that our God is not one to despise or neglect those who are broken. After all, we assume he recognises our universal brokenness. He can’t just relate to success stories: by his standards there are none.
Our God is close to the brokenhearted and we are to imitate him in that. Whenever God’s people gather together, whatever else they may be, they will be a community of the brokenhearted.
Blessings
