Read 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

16 So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. 17 For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure, 18 because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal. (NRSV)

There are times when a certain writer puts things so well that all you can do is quote him! My understanding of the relationship of this life to eternal life is beautifully put by the Jesuit writer John Powell.

By all means join in the dance and sing the songs of a full life. At the same time remember you are a pilgrim. Eternal life has begun in you but is not yet perfectly completed. There are still inevitable sufferings but remember the sufferings of this present stage in your life are nothing compared to the glory to be revealed to you.

On your way to your eternal home, enjoy the journey. Joyfully possess what you have and eagerly anticipate what will be. Say a resounding “yes” to life and love at all times. Some day you will come up into my mountain and then for you all the clocks and calendars will have finished their counting. Together with all my children, you will be mine and I will be yours for ever.

Couldn’t put it better myself!
