Read Romans 12:1
1-2 So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. (THE MESSAGE)
Some of us have heard appeals for us to give ourselves one hundred percent for Jesus. Some of us may have been stirred by that and responded with a promise to do just that. Few of us have sustained the promise! Such is the way of human fallibility and yet also human longing to worship God.
Worship of God is not just singing songs in church; it is a whole of life dedication to following the ways of Jesus. It is hard to do because such dedication conflicts with our inbuilt desire to please and assert ourselves. We mistakenly figure that hanging on to a bit of independence will allow us to enjoy our self-assertion while also giving some allegiance to Jesus.
It doesn’t really work like that. The more fully we commit ourselves to Jesus the more we experience his love and grace. Half-heartedness won’t do the trick. The very old hymn puts it well:
But we never can prove
the delights of his love
until all on the altar we lay;
for the favour he shows
and the joy he bestows,
are for those who will trust and obey.
