Read Psalm 94:20

20          Can unjust leaders claim that God is on their side—
leaders whose decrees permit injustice? (NLT)

Throughout history, some national or military leaders claim to have God on their side. The cause they espouse is just and good so therefore God supports that same cause. It can even develop into a mentality of believing certain nations are God’s favourites.

It is certainly true that some nations have laws and practices that better reflect God’s values than others. Some nations at least have a go at establishing just and wise policies even if they inevitably fall short. And in some wars at least, there seems to be a more or less clear battle between good and evil. Even so, the forces of ‘good’ are themselves tarnished by the ever-present human fallibility.

Our text reminds us that no nation or leader that puts forward unjust laws can claim to have God on their side. It was the fatal flaw of many rulers of Old Testament Israel that they hid behind their chosen-people status and reckoned God was on their side irrespective of what they did. They were terribly mistaken as their history showed.

On an individual level, too, we need to be wary of claiming God is on our side. We might be mistaken. God can never become captive to a national interest, a political or economic system, or an individual or group passion. We cannot capture him.

Rather than claiming God is on our side, we ought to concentrate on being sure we are on his side.
