Read Colossians 2:18-19
18-19 Don’t tolerate people who try to run your life, ordering you to bow and scrape, insisting that you join their obsession with angels and that you seek out visions. They’re a lot of hot air, that’s all they are. They’re completely out of touch with the source of life, Christ, who puts us together in one piece, whose very breath and blood flow through us. He is the Head and we are the body. We can grow up healthy in God only as he nourishes us. (THE MESSAGE)
Sad to say that within Christian circles we can find a sort of spiritual elitism. There are some who claim to be just that better, just that more spiritual, just that more in tune with the heartbeat of God.
They may do so on the basis of their comprehensive knowledge of the Bible, or their sacrificial devotion to the poor and needy, or their thrilling experiences of God’s Spirit speaking very personal words to them. Some even take pride in how much they are enduring persecution and suffering. There are many soils in which spiritual superiority grows and flourishes.
It is troubling that some of these people even seek to impose themselves on others. I have experienced this, therefore you must too. I have decided to follow Jesus this way, so this must be your way too. I understand the Bible this way, therefore it is the only way.
Paul addresses this sort of elitism by reminding us that all that basically matters is our devotion to Jesus. Majoring on minors distracts us. Once we make our experiences, our pattern of worship and service, our study of Scripture the main thing, then we have lost sight of the main person.
