Read Genesis 2:18
18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” (NLT)
The very first thing God didn’t like about his creation was the aloneness of the first human being. No other part of his creation was suitable as a solution to this aloneness. So another human being was created.
Each of us is made for relationship, not just with the earth, not even just with God. To say that we only need God and not one another is to disbelieve what God is saying in our passage. We were made to relate to him, but not just to him.
Our lives are shaped by the nature of our relationships. Our legacies are determined by the shape of our relationships. How has my life enriched the lives of others? How have they enriched my own life? When we look back on our lives it would be very sad if we could only reflect on the money we made, the jobs we did, the property we owned, the academic successes we achieved. How good it is to look back and see how much blessing is given and received in relationship with one another.
One more thing: the fact we are made for relationship is a reflection of what we call the Trinity. God himself enjoys relationship with himself in the person of the Son and the Holy Spirit. Being made in the image and likeness of God entails being made for relationship. God does not fly solo. Nor do we.
