Some people prefer to think of life as a book that we write as we go on—that’s fair enough. But I think a better way is to say it is that life is a journey.

Back in 1991 Tom Cochrane wrote a song called “Life is a Highway.” The first verse of the song says this:

Well, life’s like a road that you travel on
There’s one day here and the next day gone
Sometimes you bend, sometimes you stand
Sometimes you turn your back to the wind.

Life is definitely like a road we travel on. Life is a journey.

Life is a journey. Sometimes the journey has good times and sometimes the journey has difficult times. Sometimes the journey is sweet and sometimes the journey is bitter. Sometimes the journey is long and sometimes the journey is short. Life is a journey that all of us must walk through. Life is A Journey.

From the Jewish poet, Rabbi Alvin Fine:

Birth is a beginning
And death a destination
But life is a journey,
A going—a growing
From stage to stage.
From Childhood to maturity
And youth to age.
From innocence to awareness
And ignorance to knowing;
From foolishness to discretion
And then perhaps to wisdom.
From weakness to strength
Or strength to weakness–
And, often back again.
From health to sickness
And back we pray, to health again.
From offense to forgiveness,
From loneliness to love,
From joy to gratitude,
From pain to compassion,
And grief to understanding—
From fear to faith.
From defeat to defeat to defeat—
Until, looking backward or ahead,
We see that victory lies
Not at some high place along the way,
But in having made the journey,
stage by stage
A sacred pilgrimage.
Birth is a beginning
And death a destination
But life is a journey,
A sacred pilgrimage
Made stage by stage—
From birth to death
To life Everlasting.

When we travel anywhere in the world we need to feel secure. We need to be security conscious. Psalm 121 refers to God as our Helper, Keeper, Protector, Preserver.

God Cares about Each Step of the Journey

Sometimes, when we are in the thick of the journey we can forget that God is still there and that he cares deeply for us. In Matthew 10 Jesus sent out the twelve apostles and “gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.” (Matthew 10:1). Jesus also warned them that persecution would accompany their preaching (Matthew 10:16-22).

As an encouragement in the midst of this persecution, Jesus told the disciples of his Father’s care: “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows” (Matthew 10:29-31).

The point Jesus was making is this: If God is concerned about the tiny sparrow and takes notice of its fate, how much greater must his concern be for us, who are immeasurably greater in value than the sparrow!

Each step of the journey is important.
