Read Matthew 6:33
33 Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met. (THE MESSAGE)
Let’s face it, we want to be happy, we want to experience pleasure. Nothing wrong with that—except when we make such wants our overriding priority in life. One of the ironies of life is that if we devote ourselves to being happy we end up being unhappy. Because happiness is dependent on our external circumstances which we can’t ultimately control. And our pursuit of happiness can cut across others’ similar pursuits, resulting in conflict.
If pleasure becomes our goal, we so easily become selfish and shallow. Best to see pleasure not as a goal to be chased but a gift to be enjoyed. Pursuing the God who is the source of all true pleasure puts things into perspective.
Our text has Jesus addressing this perspective. Instead of madly pursuing material things (which may not be wrong in themselves), we are to pursue God’s way of life, live under his rule. We will find that life works better when we do so. We have things in their right order. When even the good and necessary things in life get out of focus they become problem areas. But when placed under our overall commitment to Jesus’ ways, they can be experienced and enjoyed.
Our overarching desire is to love God and others. When this is in place, all other desires assume their proper place.
