Read Job 34:4
4 Let us discern for ourselves what is right;
let us learn together what is good. (NIV)
Many of our failures in life can be traced back to not discerning what is really going on in a certain situation. We misread what is happening, fail to grasp the deeper meaning to a meeting or a conversation. We lack awareness of what impact our words and acts are having on others.
We can remedy this in part by not being so busy or rushed, not being so reactive. Praying for true empathy for others. Taking the time to reflect on what is happening in our life. Another remedy is found in other people. How good it would be to belong to a community of shared discernment! To be with others who may see reality differently.
Each of us will usually see reality through our own lens, our own background. We will thus see only part of that reality. If we meet with others regularly and authentically, we will begin to see a larger chunk of reality. They see things we miss, and vice versa.
Such communities are marked by careful listening and willingness to change our own opinions. It is not as if we all have to agree on everything. Rather we come to recognise that no one individual has a monopoly on reality, that different perspectives can inform, correct, and enrich us.
Yet another reason to avoid the nonsensical notion of solitary Christianity!
