Building Cathedrals — A LifeWords Devotion

Our text reminds us that everything we do or say is to faithfully represent Jesus. We are his ambassadors whatever we may be doing. We live in such a way as to bring credit to Jesus.

Read Colossians 3:17

17 And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father. (NLT)

A story has been told of a traveller back in the Middle Ages stopping by a group of labourers. They were chipping away at a pile of rocks at the side of the road near a town where a great church was being built. He asked one man what he was doing, and the reply was that he was breaking up rocks. He then asked a second man what his work was, and the reply from him was that he was building a cathedral.

Both men doing the same job, but with a very different end in mind and thus a different attitude. One saw his mundane job as just some rock chipping. The other saw the bigger picture and we can assume it made a difference to his work.

Our text reminds us that everything we do or say is to faithfully represent Jesus. We are his ambassadors whatever we may be doing. We are not just his representatives when we embark on major projects, or just when we are doing ‘church stuff’. We live in such a way as to bring credit to Jesus.

Sometimes what we do might seem the equivalent of chipping away at a pile of rocks. But with God’s help we can see it as some sort of witness to the grace and goodness of Jesus. What on one level is sheer drudgery, is on another level an act of thankful witness.
