The great exchange

Read 2 Corinthians 5:21

21 God put the wrong on him who never did anything wrong, so we could be put right with God. (THE MESSAGE)

On that first Good Friday an exchange was made. All the evil, all the wrongdoing of humankind throughout history was absorbed by Jesus on the cross. As representative of humanity, he took the weight of humanity’s sin on himself. Evil threw everything at him. He took it all. And having taken it all, having experienced God forsakenness, he had done his job. It was finished, it was accomplished.

The resurrection demonstrates the mission was completed and that sin and death had been conquered. What saves this from being merely a wonderful demonstration of human sacrifice is that in taking the weight of sin’s consequences on himself, he allows us to escape those ultimate consequences. Which boils down to eternal separation from God.

What kept us from God had been shouldered by Jesus on the cross. Now that it is removed, we have the chance to be right with God. The locked and barred door is opened. The barrier has been demolished. Sin and death are still with us and we experience their consequences. But we are assured of ultimate victory, and assured of God’s love for us and his presence with us forever.

All that remains for us is to ensure we walk through the now open door.
