Read 1 Corinthians 15:56-57

It was sin that made death so frightening and law-code guilt that gave sin its leverage, its destructive power. But now in a single victorious stroke of Life, all three—sin, guilt, death—are gone, the gift of our Master, Jesus Christ. Thank God! (The Message)

Someone has calculated that each hour of every day, 5,417 people die. That is a lot of dying. The old saying tells us that there are only two certainties in life, death and taxes. And since rather too many avoid the latter, that leaves us with only one true certainty.

The reason why Christians don’t make too much fuss about Easter Eggs and Easter Bunnies and Easter Shows is not because they are miserable wowsers preoccupied with heaven. It is because they believe a cure for death has been discovered. Jesus has overcome it and promises we can as well if we place our destinies in his hands.

Of course he doesn’t abolish the actual cessation of human life. We stop breathing at some point. But we need not stay dead if our hands are joined in faith to the living Jesus. He has demolished the door of death and we are invited to go through that now open door. Death is no longer fatal for the follower of Jesus. It means that we no longer need to fearfully cower at the thought of death or rage against the dying of the light of life. Because we know that the light of life is extinguished only in order that the greater light of a new life has dawned.

Bunnies are cute, eggs are delicious, shows are entertaining. But a cure for death beats them all.
