The comings of Jesus

Read Revelation 22:20-21

20 He who is the faithful witness to all these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon!”

Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!

21 May the grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s holy people. (NLT)

We live between the comings of Jesus. He came once to initiate God’s rescue mission for his world. Not many recognised him as such. Just an infant born in squalid surroundings who grew up to make apparently outlandish statements about himself. And to cap it off, die the death of a common criminal.

The Bible says he is coming again. It says he is coming ‘soon’. Christians have come to assume his idea of time is rather different to our own! However, that doesn’t mean he is lying about returning. And when he does come for the second time, it will be in a different way for a different purpose.

He will come with unmistakable grandeur. And it will be no rescue mission. It will be to announce that time is up. The new heavens and the new earth will be inaugurated, human destinies will be determined on the basis of what humans have done about God’s earlier offer of rescue.

So we look back with gratitude to the first coming of Jesus and look ahead with hope to the second coming. In the meantime, we live in the light of his first coming in that we try to conform our lives to his own. And we live in the light of his second coming in that we are aware that all we do comes under his scrutiny.

Jesus has come, and he is yet to come.
