The bigger picture

Read Ephesians 1:9-10

9-10 For God had allowed us to know the secret of his plan, and it is this: he purposes in his sovereign will that all human history shall be consummated in Christ, that everything that exists in Heaven or earth shall find its perfection and fulfilment in him. (JBP)

My father used to tell me stories of his time as a soldier in World War II. His experiences of fighting the enemy and being captured as a POW. He told of confusion and blunders and uncertainty. He spoke of the messiness of war.

Many individual soldiers have written memoirs of their war service that tell a similar story. They are told to advance up that hill, or retreat through that town, or blow up that bridge, or hold that village. They don’t usually know the reasons; they cannot know just what part their individual actions are playing in the larger scheme of things.

But when we read accounts of war written by generals and strategists, we see the bigger picture. There is often (not always!) purpose behind the confusion. Individual soldiers are being moved around as part of a broader strategy that only the higher-ups can see. To the soldier in the field, it all seems pointless as well as highly dangerous. To the strategist at headquarters it is part of a plan for victory.

Much like our own involvement in the life of the Christian community. We are foot soldiers doing the master’s bidding. We can be in great danger, we can be thoroughly confused, we can wonder does anyone know what is going on, is anyone in charge? We see so little of the wider and bigger picture.

Thus we take note of texts like the one today. God has his plans and purposes. We play our part without knowing all the details. We trust that there is someone in charge and that he does indeed know what he is doing.
