Read Ephesians 6:12
12 For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. (NLT)
Some Christians seem to have no difficulty in grasping the supernatural reality of the resurrection, or God’s creation of the world from nothing, and yet are very quiet about angels and demons. Some Christians have great faith in the authority of the Bible which speaks of miracles done in Jesus’ name, and yet are sceptical of the performance of such miracles in our own time.
Does the very ‘weirdness’ of the concept of spiritual beings (good and evil) put us off? Does a belief that the Bible is all we need dismiss the need for signs and wonders today? Does our wariness of succumbing to the spectacular and phoney stop us from being open to God doing things we would not normally expect?
Christians in many parts of the world can testify to this unseen spiritual world and how it interacts with their daily lives. They attest to miracles. We might hope that those of us who live in the so called ‘Western’ world would not look down our noses at that and label it all superstition or gullibility.
Needless to say, we have to guard against naivety and gullibility. Guard against demanding God put on a show for us. Guard against becoming obsessed with the world of angels and demons. But in our desire not to go off the deep end in such matters, be careful not to go off the shallow end. That too has its dangers.
