Read 2 Timothy 3:16-17
16-17 There’s nothing like the written Word of God for showing you the way to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another—showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God’s way. Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us. (THE MESSAGE)
“Easy to assemble, no special tools required, simple instructions enclosed.” Have you ever felt those words were blatant false advertising? The reality behind the packaging is that the words are phrased by someone with little grasp of English. The illustrations may as well be Egyptian hieroglyphics.
When God gave us his instruction manual for life he didn’t indulge in false advertising. The Bible does what it says it will do. Because it has its origins in the mind of God it will show us the way to get right with him and live his way.
But there are a couple of cautions. One is that the Bible doesn’t promise to tell us the truth about absolutely everything. It is not a comprehensive textbook on all the sciences and humanities. It will infallibly achieve what it sets out to do, not what we might insist it should do.
Another caution is that it does take effort to grasp it and apply it. Like any good book, it repays careful study. And we have to admit that there are some bits we just can’t grasp at all. We can only assume that God will help us understand what needs to be understood and let those other bits be.
So we can ultimately trust that the Bible will lead us up the path of real life, not the garden path.
