Read Zephaniah 3:17

17            The Lord your God is in your midst,
                     a mighty one who will save;
                he will rejoice over you with gladness;
                     he will quiet you by his love;
                he will exult over you with loud singing. (ESV)

This lesser known prophet is most famous for just one phrase or idea: that God delights over us with singing. The words were originally applied to the people of Judah who were suffering under ungodly rulers. All seemed lost. But God hadn’t given up on his people. Those who remained true to him were assured God was to be true to them.

And so we read of the mighty God who fights for his people, who delights in his people, who settles and comforts them with his love. A God who has not deserted them even as many have deserted him. And we read of a God who sings over his people. Not a mournful lament but a song of delight and victory. A wonderful image of a God who is passionate about his people rather than a grim-faced deity beyond human passion or feeling.

Which may lead us to query whether he hear such singing. Does my busyness and my dismissal of him from my everyday life deafen me to his love song? Does he still sing even when I sin so grievously? Does he sing over others and yet not to me?

Perhaps my daily prayer is to be that I am so quieted by his love for me that I can hear the love song that he sings to me and over me.
