Read Hebrews 4:14-16

14 So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. 15 This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. 16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most. (NLT)

The writer Adrian Plass tells of a story of a young monk who was greatly troubled by the fact that many children came into the world without a lot going for them. Why would God put up with that, as well as all the other suffering in the world?

He went to an older monk for advice. This older monk told him to go into the monastery chapel and kneel in front of the cross. While kneeling, he was to repeat the phrase, “I am in it with you.” Then he was to return to see what had happened.

The younger monk did as he was told and soon found himself weeping, but realising they were not merely his tears but the tears of God who grieved over his broken world and those who lived in it. He reported all this to his advisor and realised that while there was no answer to the problem of suffering, there was at least a perspective.

God doesn’t seem in a hurry to give us an easy answer to such hard questions. But he does assure us that when we suffer we have someone who understands, that when we weep we do not weep alone. Our hearts may break, but we are in the presence of a heartbroken God.
