Read Proverbs 5:18
18 Let your wife be a fountain of blessing for you.
Rejoice in the wife of your youth. (NLT)
Weddings can be rather a challenge to arrange. So many plans and hopes and dreams (let alone hard cash!) is invested in the wedding day. Then again, if you reckon the wedding day is a challenge, sustaining a faithful marriage is a much bigger challenge. The event of the wedding may be hard work, but the process of being married is much harder.
Sadly, for too many the process is too much. The happy smiles and blissful feelings of the wedding day are but a memory. The vows exchanged can be battered and bruised. The wedding is over, the honeymoon has ended, and marriage hasn’t turned out the way we imagined it would.
It need not be like this. While many do separate and divorce, many stay together. The wedding has come and gone, but the faithful love of marriage remains. While we may be disheartened by how many marriages fail, we can be heartened by how many flourish.
Loving another person is about the hardest thing we will ever be called to do. (Falling in love, by comparison, is quite easy). This text from Proverbs (which can refer to wives as well as husbands) reminds us that the love and delight of the wedding day can linger on, albeit in different shapes and forms. The woman may be the wife of your youth, but the implication is that she remains your wife when youth is but a memory.
Blessings
