Read James 1:16-17
16 Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. (NIV)
Apparently it was the painter Vincent Van Gogh who penned the words: “It is true there is an ebb and a flow, but the sea remains the sea.”
Those who put their trust in the God of the Bible are aware he is unchanging in his essential character and purposes. But they are also aware that the circumstances in which we trust him are constantly changing. Our challenge is to maintain trust in the unchanging God in the midst of those changing circumstances.
We will have days of sadness and gladness, delight and despondency, clarity and mystery. We will experience guilt and gratitude, success and failure. And through it all we are called to entrust ourselves to a God who encompasses all these experiences and remains faithful in them all. We are called to love him in the dark and in the light.
In our lives there will be storms and winds which may tempt us to fear but we know there is still the constancy of God. We encounter the ebbs and flows but are aware that the sea remains the sea. We hold on to the rock-bottom reality that our God is a sea of love and goodness.
