Read John 4:28-30

28 The woman left her water jar beside the well and ran back to the village, telling everyone, 29 “Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could he possibly be the Messiah?” 30 So the people came streaming from the village to see him. (NLT)

When it comes to sharing our faith, most Christians think it is important and most Christians struggle with it. We are persuaded and cajoled to attend training courses, to run events, to invite people to such things. We are reminded that we need to know something about the content of the faith we are to share.

And there is nothing wrong with any of that. But what can sometimes niggle at us is the question as to just what it is we are witnessing to? True, we witness to a set of objective truths: the existence of a personal God, the divinity of Jesus, the death and resurrection of Jesus. After all, our faith is not just a feeling or a leap in the dark.

But what can be missing is our own personal life-changing encounter with Jesus. We may have had such an encounter once but we struggle to witness to any such recent encounter. In other words, we are not quite like this Samaritan woman who met Jesus at a desert watering place. She could testify to a life-changing encounter with a man who knew all about her and yet who seemingly did not reject her.

We are to witness to a set of reasonable truths. But we are to do more than that: we are to witness to a man who knows all about us and loves us just the same.
