Read Hebrews 4:15-16

15 This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do,yet he did not sin. 16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most. (NLT)

It is so sad to hear of Christians who have the impression that God is some cosmic CEO who sits behind a desk, arms folded, lips pursed, reminding us of our failure to measure up to our key performance indicators. A stony-faced deity who sadly shakes his head at our failures and urges us to do better in future.

The picture our text portrays is rather different. Jesus knows what it is like to struggle with human weakness. He didn’t succumb to it but he battled it. So as we engage in our own battles we have someone in heaven who has been through it. The point is not that he has been tested in every specific way but that he has endured the general categories of testing that we may experience.

We take our small steps and may regard them as pitiful. But we have someone in heaven who delights in such small steps. He doesn’t favour the big striders! He makes allowance for our weaknesses. He knows that those small steps might be big in the light of our life situation. He truly does know what is going on inside us and around us.

Sometimes, small steps are all we can take.
