Read 2 Corinthians 10:3-5
3 Indeed, we live as human beings, but we do not wage war according to human standards; 4 for the weapons of our warfare are not merely human, but they have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments 5 and every proud obstacle raised up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to obey Christ. (NRSV)
The idea of mind or thought control is a bit sinister. We don’t like the idea of someone or something controlling what we think and how we think. We want to be able to be free to think things through ourselves and not be manipulated.
And yet our minds are battlefields. The supernatural evil one is at work attacking us and attacking those who are seeking truth. The father of lies has a horror of the truth. He works on the minds and thoughts of those who seek God, distorting their thinking and replacing truth with attractive lies.
And he also attacks those who already believe. Which of us has not felt overwhelmed by negative or fearful thoughts? Which of us has not lain awake at night and imagined worst-case scenarios which keep us from sleep?
Paul wants us to recognise this for what it is: the evil one twisting our thought processes. We are to capture such thoughts and see them in the light of God’s truth and so obey Jesus. We allow the God of all truth to capture our thoughts and minds so that being captive, we are set free.
