Faith or fairytale?

Read John 1:4-5

4        The Word gave life to everything that was created,
and his life brought light to everyone.
5        The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness can never extinguish it. (NLT)

The University of Oxford Professor of Mathematics John Lennox once was asked to respond to something Stephen Hawking had written about Christianity. Apparently Hawking had said that religion is a fairy story for people who are afraid of the dark. Lennox,a Christian, replied that atheism is a fairy story for people who are afraid of the light.

It is rather hard to be a thorough going atheist. Such a person, when they claim there is no God,presumes to know all there is to know about reality. It is probably more honest and humble to admit to being an agnostic and have doubts about God’s existence.

True followers of Jesus know their faith is not a fairy tale but one that has historical credibility. And they suspect, like Lennox, that those who dismiss the idea of the God of the Bible are avoiding the light he might shine on their lives.

As our text reminds us,Jesus brought light into the world. And it reminds us that light and darkness are in opposition. Human beings, including very clever human beings, all stand in need of God’s mercy and need reminding that they are creations of God designed to live for him and not for themselves. Human beings, including very clever human beings, resent such a message and steer clear of the light.

Lennox and Hawking may each claim victory in whatever debates they have. But in the battle between light and darkness there is only one ultimate winner.
