Read Matthew 6:34
34 “Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now,and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes. (THE MESSAGE)
So easy to say and to read,so very hard to do! And yet if we are to truly follow Jesus we need to be able to live in the present moment. Jesus is always with us,trying to get our attention, trying to give meaning to each moment. We so often don’t discern him because we are either looking over our shoulder at the past or peering anxiously into the future.
Past regrets and future fears prevent us from encountering the living Jesus here and now. And it is in the here and now that we do encounter him. The past has gone, the future does not as yet exist. The only world we have to deal with is the present world. This is where we find Jesus.
We can find ourselves preoccupied with wondering what we will do or say if a certain thing happens in the future. Or preoccupied with what might have happened if only we had done or said something in the past. But all this is futile. We can only live in the world and the situation that confronts us now. We can’t live amidst hypotheticals.
To commit the past to a gracious and merciful God,and the future to a wise and powerful God is to be free to embrace the present moment. To experience God as he is rather than be haunted by what might have been or what might be. The past has gone, the future is yet to come. We are thus left with today, the only day in which we may find Jesus.
