Read Ephesians 2:10

10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (NIV)

No Christian seriously questions the need to be out and about doing good. It is all part of extending the rule of God in his world. It is all about loving God and our neighbour. It is all about showing that our faith is genuine through our good works.

Problems can arise when we are faced with lots and lots of good things that need to be done and we can hardly make a start with any of them. There may be too many needs; we may be unwell or simply fatigued; we may lack material resources.

Rather than get all hot and bothered about what we can’t do,we might better focus on what we can do. From our text it seems God has in mind the sorts of things we need to be doing. And he is not asking us to fix every problem or meet every need. Not even Jesus could do this in his earthly life.

Our time and energy are limited so we best seek the face of God and discern just what good thing among many good things are for us to do. Rather than let our guilty consciences or the advice of others dictate our actions, let the Spirit of God do so. And so we do what we can,not what we can’t.
