Abundant life

Read John 10:10

10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. (NRSV)

This is one of those many verses in Scripture that might cause us to scratch our heads in puzzlement. It sounds so wonderful, promises so much. But how does it apply to the grieving parents of a dying child or those Christians facing execution day after day?

It all depends on how we understand ‘abundant life’. Some want to project it all into the future: Jesus is promising wonderful life in heaven irrespective of what is happening now. While that is true,Jesus seems to be promising something in our present life as well.

Perhaps we are wanting Jesus to promise us abundant health or wealth,or abundance in high-achieving respectful children,or abundant comfort. If so,we have a problem with what Jesus is saying because these things are not experienced by any and every follower of Jesus. It seems Jesus idea of an abundant and satisfying life is different to our own.

In which case we do well to realign our hearts to his own heart and give up the rather childish yet attractive notion that Jesus is there to do our bidding and ensure life goes well for us on our own terms.

Jesus isn’t promising us abundant safety or abundant ease. He is promising us abundant life. So we are left to ponder just what Jesus thinks is real ‘life’.
