Read 2 Chronicles 20:12
12 O our God,won’t you stop them? We are powerless against this mighty army that is about to attack us. We do not know what to do,but we are looking to you for help.” (NLT)
We all like to think we can manage life, that we have things under control. In fact we expend enormous energy on ensuring this is so. And since it can never be so,we endure much frustration and fatigue.
The way of Jesus is the way of trust. And the way of trust is the way of helplessness and brokenness. We only truly learn to trust in God when we have come to the end of our own resources. When we recognise that we cannot fix or control or understand or overcome our present situation,it is then we learn the art of blessed surrender.
This was what the king Jehoshaphat realised when surrounded by enemy armies. All his might and strength and experience could not save him. He was at his wit’s end. He had run out of ideas. But this did not spell defeat-in fact it led to victory.
Coming to the end of our own resources can drive us to despair; we can succumb to anxiety or hopelessness. But it can also cause us to look to God for help. Which is why the Bible repeatedly tells us that testing, while not pleasant, builds our faith. It is when things seem hopeless that we discover our only sure hope is God.
