The wedding and the marriage

Read Ephesians 5:25-28

25-28 Husbands,go all out in your love for your wives, exactly as Christ did for the church-a love marked by giving, not getting. Christ’s love makes the church whole. His words evoke her beauty. Everything he does and says is designed to bring the best out of her, dressing her in dazzling white silk, radiant with holiness. And that is how husbands ought to love their wives. They’re really doing themselves a favour-since they’re already “one” in marriage. (THE MESSAGE)

It seems weddings are getting more and more expensive. Everything has to be just right on the special day and with some people no expense is spared. A wedding can be a complex piece of logistics,so much planning put in to arranging what is actually a relatively brief proceeding.

If only as much time and effort and thought and planning went in to the marriage! A wedding is an event, marriage is a process. Of course we want to make a wedding day special and memorable (though it is debatable that we have to spend so much money on making it so). But the ongoing living and working together also requires a lot of effort.

A wedding is only the beginning, and we hope it is a wonderful beginning. But to so concentrate on the beginning and assume the rest of the journey will somehow take care of itself defies logic. How sad if the costly and perfectly organised down to the last detail wedding day becomes a bittersweet memory a few years down the track after the marriage has foundered.

Many brides and grooms and their families reckon organising a wedding is hard work. But compared to nurturing a healthy marriage,it is a piece of cake.
