Read Proverbs 16:25
Sometimes there is a way that seems to be right,
but in the end it is the way to death. (NRSV)
The American poet Robert Frost wrote “Two paths diverged in a wood…and I took the road less travelled by and that has made all the difference”. We are so often faced with crucial decisions. One way seems to be the obvious way, perhaps the easier way,the more popular or socially acceptable way. But as our text points out,it might not be the best way.
Following the crowd,or even following our immediate instincts,is no guarantee of a positive outcome. Choosing the easier path might turn out to be a lot harder. Jesus himself said that the broad way leads to destruction. Yet it is not as if we have to inevitably choose the harder option. We can in fact choose a well travelled road and be obedient to God.
The point is we need to exercise prayerful discernment. Seek counsel, search the Scriptures, when a big decision has to be made. Don’t just go for the obvious option. It might seem right but might be all wrong. Appearances can be deceiving.
God does not play silly games with us at such times. If we truly seek his way we will not go wrong. Just be sure we are prepared for that way to be a less travelled way. If we are so prepared,it will make all the difference.
