Read Isaiah 46:3-4
3-4 “Listen to me,family of Jacob,
everyone that’s left of the family of Israel.
I’ve been carrying you on my back
from the day you were born,
And I’ll keep on carrying you when you’re old.
I’ll be there, bearing you when you’re old and gray.
I’ve done it and will keep on doing it,
carrying you on my back, saving you. (THE MESSAGE)
In the various phases of our life journey, many different people support us and accompany us. But it is uncommon for one person to be with us each and every moment of each and every season. Some were especially influential when we were students. Others helped us as we moved into a new area till we lost contact with them when we moved again. Some have only arrived on the scene recently. Some who were our companions have died.
This passage reminds us that only our God is constant. He cared for us prior to our birth,in infancy, childhood and adolescence. He ushered us into adulthood and doesn’t leave us as we move into what the old prayer book calls the ‘riper years’. He is not a God for one season or one phase of our journey. He won’t give up on us when we get old as if he is part of our youth-obsessed world which sees ageing as a terrifying enemy.
We can’t possibly know what the future holds for any of us. Only that it will involve even more change. Some will be welcome, some will be unwelcome. One thing we can be sure of is that the God who has carried us till now will not drop us as if our lives have got too heavy for him. When he brought us into being,he promised to be with us for the long haul.
Blessings
