Read John 2:1-5

1 Two days later there was a wedding in the Galilean village of Cana.

2-3 Jesus’ mother was there and he and his disciples were invited to the festivities. Then it happened that the supply of wine gave out,and Jesus’ mother told him,”They have no more wine.”

4 “Is that your concern,or mine?” replied Jesus. “My time has not come yet.”

5 So his mother said to the servants,”Mind you do whatever he tells you.” (JBP)

Jesus’ mother is a great model of intercessory prayer. She is aware of a need and goes to the one person she reckons can help. No futile internal wrestling and agonising, just telling Jesus what the problem was. To intercede is to invite Jesus to intervene to address a need.

Jesus’ response does not seem that positive. In short he is reminding Mary that the time for a full revelation of his status and power has not yet come. He will not be swayed into becoming a ‘miracle on demand’ figure, even by his own mother. And yet Mary isn’t put off by his apparent lack of concern.

She then avoids doing what we so often do. We tell Jesus the need and then tell him how we want him to deal with it. Not so Mary. She has told Jesus the need, and then leaves it with him. And her words to the servants indicate she believes he will act. But how he will do so is not her concern.

We bring people and situations to Jesus, not discouraged by the lack of instant response. We leave it all with him, trusting him to do what is best when it is best. We trust that the good wine will flow.
